Se non si possono sradicare completamente gli errori, né battersi contro i vizi come in effetti vorreste, non ci si deve tirare indietro per questo. Sarebbe come voler abbandonare una nave nella tempesta soltanto perché non si è in grado di controllare i venti. D’altro canto, non serve a niente cercare d’imporre a forza idee del tutto nuove, che non sortirebbero alcun effetto contro i pregiudizi della gente. Si deve parlare indirettamente, muoversi con quanto più tatto è possibile, dandosi almeno da fare per ridurre al minimo il danno di quegli errori che non si possono correggere. Poiché non potrà esserci perfezione finché gli esseri umani non diventeranno perfetti, speranza alla quale ho rinunciato ormai da tempo.”

Mica cerco di convincere nessuno ad adottare il sistema proposto da Platone nella sua immaginaria Repubblica, né quello vigente attualmente in Utopia, che per quanto migliori del nostro potrebbero apparire eccentrici, dato che non prevedono la proprietà privata ma solo la comunione dei beni”.
